Native American Wax Museum
Now that you have had an overview of UDL, let’s look at a unit that was created with UDL principles in mind.
Unit Title:
Native Americans
Unit Focus:
Social Studies standard in 4th grade at Antioch Elementary:
SS4H1 The students will describe how early Native American cultures developed in North America

Locate where the American Indians settled with emphasis on Arctic (Inuit), Northwest (Kwakiutl), Plateau (Nez Perce), Southwest (Hopi), Plains (Pawnee), and Southeastern (Seminole).
b.
Describe how the American Indians used their environment to obtain food, clothing, and shelter.
Topics & Key Concepts:
Native Americans in the Arctic (Inuit), Northwest (Kwakiutl), Plateau (Nez Perce), Southwest (Hopi), Plains (Pawnee), and Southeastern (Seminole); How these Native Americans used their environment to obtain food, clothing, and shelter.
Summary of Unit:
Students will use print materials and the internet to research the six groups of Native Americans listed above. A background collage will be created that represents each group of Native Americans. Students will then write a paragraph that summarizes their tribe. Dressed as their chosen Native American tribe, students will pretend to be characters in a Wax Museum. When visitors come to each tribe, the students will “come to life” and recite their individual paragraphs.
